  • The closet, closest to the front door, is the coat closet. This closet has become the catch all for everything that comes through the front door. It holds coats, hats, scarves, gloves, backpacks,shoes, umbrellas,and the vacuum cleaner (someone please tell me why the vacuum cleaner is stored with outdoor clothing)?

    This is an important closet, this is a premium space that should not be mis treated. This closet welcomes you home! It opens its door and lets you place all of your outside baggage into it. It doesn’t complain no matter how much you shove into it, on it’s rod, the floor, maybe even the shelf above. This closet takes everything you can put in it, and keeps on storing! Until one day it pops open and stuff starts to fall out. Like a snake popping out of a joke can, but this is no joke! It’s time to do something about it, take some action, get started!

    Step one: Remove everything! Yes, that’s right! I said everything, from the tippy top, to the very bottom.

    Step two: Wash the walls and baseboards, paint if needed. Line the shelf with shelf liner, and vacuum.

    Step three: Sort, purge, and edit everything into three piles. Keep, love, can’t live without, and can’t see my future with out it, pile. Then there is the “Thank you” for teaching me, what I don’t need, don’t want, and can’t use pile. Last, but not least. My favorite black trash bag, so whatever you put in there cannot be seen, so you don’t take it back out.

    Step 4: This is a tricky step. Make sure the items you are choosing to put back into this space, actually belong in this space.

    You will need matching heavy duty hangers, coats are not lite. 3-4 baskets or bins for the top shelf, to hold hats, scarves, gloves, compact umbrellas, etc… and an umbrella stand in the corner of the closet floor. (Only if you have full length umbrellas 🌂).

    Everything should be looking and feeling pretty good about now. If you have no other location for the vacuum, there should be room for it on one side of the closet floor. Remember to leave a few empty hangers for when guests come over.

  • I have stored my vitamins everywhere! From my bathroom medicine cabinet to the kitchen above my stove (bad idea) and now they are located next to my refrigerator on a low shelf, where I can easily access them when I remember to take them. Where ever you decide to keep your vitamins weather on a shelf, in a basket, or maybe a drawer. It’s completely a personal choice. Just don’t put it near too much moisture, they get all sticky and yucky (lesson learned from personal experience).

    I finally found the perfect spot for my vitamins in my kitchen at eye level. I placed my vitamins in bins grouped with like kinds, so I could see how many I had and be able to take the whole bin out when I needed to access the bins behind them… can you see my first mistake? It wasn’t so obvious when I first did it. I thought it was so perfect and for the next year it stayed that way. Can you guess what happened? Yep! You are right, I did not access the vitamins in the back and they expired. The lesson learned from this mistake, out of site out of mind and don’t consume expired vitamins.

    I set out to come up with a better way to see, and access all of my vitamins. Here we go, let me know what you think.

    I placed a clear step organizer onto the shelf. I placed all duplicates on the back two steps and the rest up front so I could not only see how much I had left but also access them easily. Then I took one medium bin and placed it on the side to hold the few large bottles I had, and a small bin on the opposite side for my droplet bottles. Now everything is visible and easy to access.

    Don’t fight it… work with it.

  • Hallways?

    Is the hallway something that needs or should be organized? There is almost nothing in it. The average hallway is 3’ feet wide and 8’-10’ feet long. Has 3-5 doors each leading to bedrooms, bathrooms, and one leading to a hall closet (which we addressed in the first post). Some homes are very blessed and have amazingly large hallways that can house full size furniture such as student’s desk, bench, and bookshelves. At first glance you might say to yourself, “there’s nothing to do here, NEXT). However if you step back and look again you might see great potential for happiness in the small space.

    Small spaces can be challenging to say the least. Let’s break this highly traveled room into bite size pieces.

    1-Let’s begin with removing everything from the space.

    2-Wash walls and baseboards, replace any burnt out lightbulbs , and sweep or vacuum.

    3-Paint the space with a fresh coat of durable paint. Unless you live in a rental, then just wash the walls.

    4-Sort, purge, or edit everything you removed from the space. (Pictures, hallway runners, bookshelves, plants, small tables, books, chair or bench) you never know what could be decorating a hallway. Only keep what truly brings peace, joy, and happiness for the future, into your life. Donate, or throw away anything that does not make the cut.

    Now that the space is empty and very clean. Ask your home, how the space would best be used. Should it be a basic through space, or is it large enough for a study area? Look at magazines and social media apps for great ideas. Not sure what your decorating style is. Search the question, “What’s my decorating style” and a list of tests will pop up. Most style test are free but they do want you to register your email with them. Having this information will help when buying new decor pieces for your home.

    5-Happiness is close at hand. As a basic through space you should choose pictures that spark interest, creativity, passion, joy, and happiness. You can put one or two large pictures in each section or multiple smaller pictures to create a collage. Place a hallway runner in a beautiful coordinating pattern and color scheme. Update the glass cover on your light to complement the new style, and if there is space add a plant.

    Now every time you walk down your hallway it will bring you happiness that will stay with you all day long.

  • If only everything was as easy as it sounds. Ever begin a project with the best of intentions? You get this great idea to clean out your closet. You run to the store and buy the cutest baskets and containers, maybe some paint or shelf liners, and let’s not forget the candy bar and cola, at the checkout counter! Great you have everything you need. Right? Well maybe not! How would you know for sure? Let’s go through all the steps and see if you bought enough baskets.

    First things first, let’s start at the beginning. What’s that? Good question!

    Step one: Decide where you will start. Some organizers say to start with your clothes, others say to start where you need the most work, and some say do whatever you are in the mood for. Well that’s not very helpful. You choose to organize your linen closet, now it’s time to empty the closet out completely! Yes everything! Now just to make sure it’s ready for your cute baskets! Wash the walls, and shelves. Paint them if needed, and vacuum the floor!

    Step two: Sort, purge, or edit everything. Put them into 3 piles, keep, love/joy, can’t live without, and can’t see my future without it. Next pile, “thank you” for showing or teaching me what I don’t need, don’t like, and don’t want. (Donate this pile, you could be holding on to something that someone else has been praying for). The last pile is my favorite! Black trash bags (black bag, so you can’t see what you have thrown away, so you don’t take anything out). It’s okay to let it go!

    Step three: This step can be challenging! Take ownership of everything you choose to keep!What does that mean? Take ownership. It means remove all packaging, tags, and labels from each item. If your keeping it, then you are not going to return it to the store. If your returning the item then you have 24 hours to get it returned or take ownership of it! (No pressure at all). Now that you have taken ownership of all of your possessions it’s time to put away everything back into the closet.

    Step four: Sort, group, and categorize each item. Place items on shelf in baskets, according to frequency of use. With lite items like pillows or blankets on the top and heavy items placed in baskets on the floor. Way to go, you did it!
